Travels with Glenn Schmidt
North Street in Sun Prairie is only a mile long. On the far end of the street, you’ll find my vocation: Northside Elementary, where I taught for 32 years. Halfway down the slight hill toward Main Street, you’ll find my home, commanded by my wife, a garden, and two cats. At the near end, you’ll find Prairie Pages, the epicenter of my avocation, travel writing.
Now look up. If the wind is right, you’ll probably see a jet landing at Dane County Airport, just 10 miles from here. I might be on board, returning from any of the 60 or so countries I’ve visited and written about.
Those journeys have taught me lessons about travel that I’ve tried to pass onto you. Some are humorous, some harrowing, but mostly they reflect on my training as a teacher, as a union organizer, and as a newspaper editor.
On a good day, I wake up thinking I’m Mark Twain, filling pages with attitude and insight. On a bad day, I wake up with aching feet from walking the Harbor Bridge in Sydney or severe jet lag from crossing a dozen time zones.
The best compliment I received about my first book, Travel Lessons, came from a listener on Larry Meiller’s noon call-in show on Wisconsin Public Radio. He said reading my books was just like traveling by my side.
My current book, Travel Lessons for Seniors, has the same aspirations, but with a greater focus on people my age, people who remember Vietnam as a political flashpoint rather than a place on a map.
There’s lots of room in the seat next to me. Grab a book and join me.
